What is Folklore?

It might be easier to ask what folklore isn't! But, if I had to, I would define folklore as anything that is learned informally - usually by way of mouth - but also by music, behaviors, customs, or material items. Folklore is considered "unofficial knowledge," in that it isn't taught in an official capacity such as at school. It is usually collaborative and created dynamically. The knowledge that folklore gives us include things about our communities, cultures, traditions, beliefs, or even ourselves. (Sims and Stephens, 2011, pgs. 11-12).

What are Urban Legends?

An urban legend is a supposed account of something that happened to a third party. The storyteller usually can't be considered to have been directly involved in the urban legend. The urban legend is always presented as if it is real even if those present don't actually believe it to be true, including the storyteller! (Sims and Stephens, 2011, pg. 66).
